Students’ Practices for Biologists, Geographers, Geologists, Ornithologists

In recent decades, due to the planned flooding, the area the Training and Information Center of MGA "Rovin" is located has been remained intact, preserving flora and fauna from human impact. There are many species of flora and fauna here listed in the Red Book of Ukraine. The area is characterized by wide and unspoiled nature.
Training Center is located in the village Dovge, Drohobych rayon, Lviv oblast. In the second half of the 1980s it was planned here the construction of Stryisky reservoir, the so-called "Carpathian Sea.” A great object had to accumulate about 200 million cubic meters of water to be used for the reliable supply of Lviv and other cities in the region. During big floods and high waters the reservoir had to protect towns and villages in the valley. And installation of two power turbines would provide the area with inexpensive electricity. Over time, it was planned to arrange the international recreation area around the reservoir. All this should contribute to the economic, cultural and tourism development of the Carpathian region. In short, the "Carpathian Sea" had to be analogous to artificial mountain lake Solina in Poland.
Fortunately, due to continuous intensive rains the mountain began to collapse, sliding the part of monolithic concrete dam, which was built for several years. The project leaders began to think about the consequences. A number of scientific and governmental councils have resulted in making the right decision - to suspend the construction.

The project to create a giant reservoir in the Carpathians carried the great economic and environmental threat:

  • Flood in the mountains is formed for five or six hours, and in case the bulk dam would be broken through, the waves from the reservoir would rush to the valley, destroying everything on the way;
  • Flooding of fertile arable land, so few in the Carpathians;
  • Relocation of local people;
  • Change of microclimate, flora and fauna, underground hydro balance violation in the SPA Carpathian region. Unique mineral springs of Truskavets and Skhidnytsya could be blurred.

Training and Information Center of MGA "Rovin" is situated in a building that was constructed for a control center of hydropower station on Striy River. There are several lakes emerged during the construction of the reservoir with crystal clear water near by the building.
